Alberta Catherine Greco

November 29, 1935 — May 23, 2024

Alberta (Bertie) C. Greco, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Rest Home in Paterson, NJ, on May 23, 2024. Born in W. Orange, NJ, to Salvatore and Genevieve Greco, Bertie was the most loved of 12 children. She was a companion to her mother for many years and made sure she got to all the baptisms, birthdays and family events. She was invaluable to maintaining the family connection. The family is sure to remember Aunt Bertie for her shortbread. She was an avid cat and dog lover, and enjoyed taking care of them.

After graduating from college, Alberta taught at St. Catherine of Siena School in Cedar Grove, NJ, until her retirement in June 1997. She had a passion for teaching. A dedicated teacher from 1958 to 1997, she is fondly remembered by hundreds of students in Cedar Grove whose lives she affected. She taught all of her students to love Jesus, Mary and God. A common memory for many of them was how she taught them cursive writing and how kind she was. The best saying attributed to a teacher is “I touch the future, I teach.” Alberta has proven that time and again.

After her retirement from St. Catherine’s, Alberta, Aunt Bertie, continued to enjoy time with her large family. She was often seen playing with the children, conversing with her siblings, nieces and nephews and sipping her gin martini, which she kept to one per special event. Alberta was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Orange, NJ, and you would see her every Sunday and Holy Day at Mass. She spent her life praying to the Blessed Mother and God. God was the center of her life. Alberta is resting peacefully in the hands of God.

Bertie is predeceased by her parents and siblings, Joseph, Genevieve Morgan, Angela McCluskey, Fr Robert and Fr. Evan, Loren, Martha Shadwell, Mary Ann Scharf, and nephews, John McCluskey and James Shadwell. She is survived by 3 brothers: Fr. Raymond, John and Richard, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 10-1 at Our Lady of the Magnificat, 2 Miller Road, Kinnelon, NJ. Funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 at the Church. Interment will immediately follow Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ. Memories and condolences may be shared at Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, Butler, NJ.
