Alfred "Gene" Eugene Barton, age 89, of Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains, formerly of Butler, died Monday, December 25, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Barton was born in Macon, Georgia, the son of the late Rev. Alfred Eugene Barton and the late Isabelle (Lewis) Barton. Gene was a long time member and former Director of Musical Ministry at the Butler United Methodist Church. He received his Masters degree in Sacred Music and he enjoyed being the Director of Musical Ministry for more than 30 years. He was a proud member of the American Guild of Organists. As well as music being his passion, he had a love for travelling. Gene was also an Army veteran. Gene retired from AT&T as a Benefits Manager, in 1989. After retirement, he spent much of his time in his home in the Adirondack mountains that he so loved, with his wife, family and friends, volunteering at Camp of the Woods, in Speculator, NY. He is survived by his beloved sons, Keith and his wife Mary, Karl and his wife Michele, his loving siblings, Frank Barton and Gloria Eubanks. He has two cherished grandchildren, Erik and Jake. He was pre deceased by his wife, Ruth K. Barton and brother Charles Barton. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 11 AM, at the Butler United Methodist Church, located at 5 Bartholdi Avenue in Butler.
