BUTLER Brother Charles F. Gilmartin, O.F.M., age 91, a professed Franciscan Friar 69 years, died October 26, 2021, after a short illness. He had lived in retirement at St. Anthony Friary. A native of Manhattan, New York, he was born Francis Gilmartin in 1930, the son of the late John and Anne Joynt Gilmartin. Brother Charles entered the Franciscan Friars in 1951 at St. Bonaventure Novitiate, Paterson. He professed first vows in 1952, and final vows in 1955. His life of prayer and service encompassed five locations in Holy Name Franciscan Province. Brother Charless fifty-year tenure occurred at St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street in Manhattan, where he was a Sacristan, and staffed the Front Desk. People attending Mass at St. Francis recall the six-foot-two brown-clad friar imparting a long reach with the collection basket! He retired in 2012 to St. Anthony Friary, the Senior Friars Residence in Butler. Brother Charles is survived by his Franciscan confreres, and by a sister-in-law, Faith Gilmartin of Lakewood, PA, and a cousin, Ellen Harris of Mechanicsville, VA. He was predeceased by a brother, James "Jim" Gilmartin of Lakewood, PA, in April, 2021.
