Claud V. Crum, age 90, was born in Bloomingdale (November 15, 1923) and lived there all his life except for the years he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, the five years at Syracuse University where he was awarded BA and MA degrees, and the two years he lived in Eldred, NY, as a teacher of English and Social Studies (NY State History). In 1953 he began building an "indoor/outdoor" house on Union Avenue in the "prairie" style inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's famous design. He taught English at Butler High School for 25 years, directed plays, and was adviser to the school newspaper, The Maple Leaf. He was named Department Chairman and he held that post until retirement. He was married to Margaret Ackerman whose family was noted in the 1925 edition of New Jersey's First Citizens. They had two children, Michele and Bartley, who produced four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. After retirement, he occupied himself with gardening and camping, the rocky coast of Maine being one of his favorite destinations. He also visited Yellowstone National Park, Acadia National Park, and many other well known sites. Viewing hours will be Friday, April 4th, 2014 from 7:00-9:00 PM at The Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Avenue, Butler, NJ. A funeral service will be held Saturday 10:00am also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Milford, NJ.
