Donald Charles Dilzer, aged 72 years, of Butler New Jersey, passed from this life on January 30, 2016. Born August 30, 1943 in Pompton Plains, the eldest son to the late Charles Nicholas Dilzer and Bertha (Ezell) Dilzer, he lived the majority of his life in Butler. A 1962 Butler High School graduate, he entered and served in the Air Force in 1963 in the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. Following his honorable discharge, he dedicated 30 years to civil service in the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. It was not uncommon for mail to be late in coming to some homes due to his readiness to speak with patrons and pass on a cheeky smile that lit up a room. He served his community as a firefighter in the Butler Volunteer Fire Department, where he drove the Hook and Ladder truck, and delighted his family and friends in many a parade in full dress uniform. Don was involved with the Cub Scouts as an adult leader. He had an endless devotion and love for his family, and enjoyed spending time with them at the family cabin and lake house at Beaver Dam in New York State. Donald is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Jane Eloise (Grimley) Dilzer, and by a brother Douglas Dilzer. Donald is survived by his sister, Diane (Dilzer) Ryder and her husband Lyle Ryder of Rockaway, NJ; brother David Dilzer and his wife Patti (Herring) Dilzer of Manakin-Sabot, NJ; son Donald Scott Dilzer and his wife Annette (Froehlich) Dilzer and their children Benjamin Nicholas Dilzer and Lauren Nichole Dilzer of Berryville, VA; and daughter Heather Jane Michelle Dilzer and her son Damien of Butler. Final arrangements will be private at Donald's request. Condolences may be sent to the Morrison Funeral Home in Butler. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to be made to the Butler Volunteer Fire Department.
