Dorothy Tintle

November 28, 1925 — December 31, 2018

Dorothy Mae (Kelley) Tintle, 93 years old, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Health Center at Bloomingdale (NJ) surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lexington, Oklahoma on November 28, 1925, as a child she survived the famous Dust Bowl of the depression-era 1930s. She met her future husband, William Thomas Tintle, Sr. during World War II in 1944, who was stationed there training to be a tail gunner while serving in the U.S. Navy. In May of 1944, she married Thomas, graduated from high school then moved with him to his hometown and became a lifelong resident of Bloomingdale, N.J. Eldest daughter Helen passed away in 2008 and husband Thomas passed away in 1996. Dorothy's life in Bloomingdale was very busy as she raised a large family and was very active in community affairs. While living in Bloomingdale she and Tom raised ten children. She taught Sunday School classes at the Bloomingdale Baptist Church. She was active in the Bloomingdale PTA, and she helped organize the first girls softball league in town while coaching the Mini Mets with lifelong friend Nancy Dale. As husband Tom owned and operated Tintle's (Esso) Exxon for over 40 years, she worked with him when they opened and operated the Bloomingdale Bootery shoe store for over 15 years. She pitched on the town's traveling women's softball team which had several Tintle girls playing on it. She liked to remind everyone that she once played on the boys high school baseball team for the Lexington Bulldogs back in Oklahoma. She was an avid bowler and participated in that sport into her late 80s. With husband Tom being the leader of the Republican Party in Bloomingdale for over 20 years, she supported him when he ran for Freeholder in the 1970s. She remained politically active into her late 80s, and in 2018 she was invited to attend a Town Council meeting where she was recognized and awarded for serving the community of Bloomingdale for over 60 years of service. Dorothy may best be remembered for the vegetable stand that she and Tom operated at their home on Van Dam Ave for over 50 years. They grew and maintained their large garden by hand and sold their produce in dollar bags that they placed on a small table at the end of the driveway. They put the bags on the table with a place to put the money. It was based on the honor system. They trusted everyone. Dorothy enjoyed watching sports, her gardening and bowling, attending church, her family, and hosting three large Tintle picnics each year during Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. Dorothy is survived by son William Thomas, Jr. of Shandaken, NY, son Paul Heusser of Mt. Arlington, son David of Bloomingdale, son Ronald and wife Penny (Jones) of Honesdale, Pa., daughter Ann and husband Bill Jones of Bloomingdale, daughter Phyllis and husband Gary Stymacks of West Milford, and son Phillip and wife Crystal (Firtek) of Vernon. Dorothy is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Viewin hours will be held on Thursday 4-8pm at the Morrison Funeral home 86 Bartholdi ave. Butler, NJ.
