Edith Rose Amirante

Edith Rose Amirante nèe Cannata, age 96, of Wayne passed on Saturday June 1, 2024.

Edith was born in Paterson, NJ on May 3, 1928. In May of 1950 Edith met the man who would become her husband, Eugene Amirante, through a family connection. As was the custom at the time, Edith and Eugene were chaperoned on dates. Usually being accompanied by Edith’s sister, Angel or brother, Albert. Edith and Eugene married on May 3, 1953 (Edith’s Birthday) at Saint Anthony’s Church in Paterson. Edith’s sixty-seven-year marriage to Eugene was blessed with five daughters.

Edith was not only a dedicated mother to her five daughters but would remain a loving caretaker to her 13 grandchildren. Edith delighted in her grandkids just as they loved their “MeMa.” Many summers Edith would join her daughters and grandkids on their vacations, where she would engage in Uno games, tell stories of her youth, and demonstrate her amazing drawing talents. From Edith, her grandchildren would learn the importance of family tradition, like Sunday dinners and large holiday gatherings overflowing with food and laughter.

In her later years Edith was an avid reader, puzzle maker, and loved psychological thriller movies. She also had great luck at the penny slots during the usual visits to Atlantic City. She would remain close with her siblings and friends where she and Eugene would host regular Uno nights at the house and meet for coffee at the local Dunkin Donuts after church every morning.

Edith will forever be remembered for her warm and loving nature and the profound impact she had on her family and friends. The love she demonstrated as the matriarch of her family will be passed down for generations.

Edith is survived by daughter Louanne Barbera and husband Steve, Marianne Scibetta and husband John, Jeanne Scognamiglio, Debbie DeRosa and husband Jimmy, and Patricia Battipede and husband Bob. Grandchildren Samantha Scibetta, Steve Barbera, Sarah Maurer and husband Ricky, Jessica Scognimiglio, Chrissy O’Connor and husband James, Jackie Bollard and husband Mike, Joe Scognamiglio and wife Danielle, Frankie Scognamiglio and girlfriend Alexa Reed, Ali Scibetta, Alfred Battipede and girlfriend Carolina Miller, Tommy Battipede and girlfriend Kaylin Ryan, Bobby Battipede, and James De Rosa. Great grandchildren Axel and Luca Maurer, Connor Barbera, Reverie O’Connor, and Penelope Scognamiglio.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 4th, from 3:00pm-8:00pm at the Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ. A funeral mass will be offered on Wednesday, June 5th, 10:45am, at St. Anthony's of Padua Church, 63 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ. Burial will follow mass at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa, NJ.
