Edward Thomas McKernan was born January 15, 1955 in Paterson, N.J. Edward was the 1st child born to Mary Jane Britton and Edward Donald McKernan. Edward spent his childhood, along with his 6 siblings Martha Augusta, Mary Squier, Betty Allogio, Dennis McKernan, Rosie Marion, and Sean McKernan, in his home town of Butler, NJ. They would spend their summers riding their bicycles down to the best fishing spots, sipping down refreshing soda pops. He became an Local 483 Ironworker to continue the McKernan family tradition 40 years years ago. Edwards marriage to Cindi Sedlar McKernan gave him two children; Amy Roman and Chris McKernan. They moved to Florida for a change in scenery and a different kind of work. He was also a concrete contractor for 4 years. An unfortunate turn of events turned Edward down a road to alcoholism. Ed was alcohol free till he died on Nov.1, 2018. Edward and his two children as luck would have it would meet his present wife Diane Vogt. Diane had 3 children of her own; Jessica, Michael, and Melissa Spiess, and before long they would move in together with their children. 4 years went by and they moved up to New Jersey. After meeting Diane, Eds life would take a dramatic turn for the best. In 1991, Ed moved back to Butler for a short time before moving to the neighboring town of Bloomingdale. He would join an Alcoholics Anonymous group. Ed & Diane got married in August of 1992. They then had a child to join in the McKernan clan named Thomas. He joined a Beatles cover band, Pennylane. With that Eddie joined many bands and then started playing at Jiggs corner in Butler with cousin Marty (Moonshine) McKernan. Ed loved playing music and going to concerts. Edwards children, Amy and Chris, blessed him with 8 beautiful grandchildren, Selena, Alex, Ryan, Kyle, Savannah, Autumn, Kayla, and Christopher. Edward faced many hardships. In 2002, Edward and Diane would lose their daughter Melissa at the young age 22. The last 10 years of Edwards life would challenge him to the limits when his lungs began to fail him. On June 2nd 2014, Ed was put on the waiting list for a lung. The procedure was done at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and was a huge success. Edward became an inspiration to those who would need similar procedures. Edward was a very loving and caring person especially to his family. He gave all his children the encouragement to pursue their dreams. Housed his grandchildren & made donations to those in need. During his final moments he was surrounded by his children and family. He wasnt in any pain. Everyone told stories of the past, told jokes, and showered him with love. Edwards passion was music. He loved the Beatles. He played a variety of instruments and would always tell stories of his childhood and his love for his family. He was a strong Catholic and is being grasped by his loving father Jesus Christ along with Mary Jane and Edward McKernan, and Melissa Spiess. May he rest in peace.
