Father Gerald T. Mccaffrey O.F.M.

McCaffrey - Father Gerald T., O.F.M., of St. Anthony Friary, Butler, NJ, on January 31, 2011, in his 79th year. Father Gerald was a professed Franciscan Friar for 58 years, and a Catholic Priest for 52 years. Father Gerald entered the Franciscan Order in 1951, and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1958. In a 25 year ministry at St. Bonaventure University, Olean, NY, he taught mathmatics, specializing in calculus, and served first as Vice President for Student Affairs, then succeded to Moderator of Athletics. In 2009 Father Gerald was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior teaching assignments included Bishop Timon High School, Buffalo, NY and Archbishop Walsh High School, Olean, NY. He persued graduate studies in mathematics at St. Louis University. From 1994 to 2005 Father Gerald assisted at St. Anthony Shrine, Boston, MA, and at Holy Cross Church, Callicoon, NY. Father Gerald retired to St. Anthony Friary, Butler, NJ in 2005. He is survived by his Franciscan confreres, and by two sisters, Mary Brennan of Charlotte, NC, and Cathy Friedman of Sharon, CT, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 4th at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's R.C. Church, Butler, NJ. Visiting, 4:00-8:00 PM, on Thursday, February 3rd , also at St. Anthony's R.C. Church. Wake service will be Thursday, February 3rd at 7:30 PM. Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY. Arrangements by The Morrison Funeral Home, Butler, NJ.
