James A. Etlinger, born on August 26, 1955, in Paterson, New Jersey, departed this world peacefully on March 17, 2025, after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. A beloved figure in the lives of many, James was not only a skilled self-employed handyman but also proudly served as a former U.S. mail carrier, bringing warmth and connection to the neighborhoods he served.
A graduate of Butler High School, James embodied a spirit of adventure and joy. He was known for his zest for life, often found with a smile on his face, eager to lend a hand to those in need. His vivacious personality and willingness to help others made him a cherished friend and confidant. James lived life on the edge, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, racing cars with unbridled enthusiasm, and found joy in the meticulous art of woodworking. Each project, a testament to his creativity and craftsmanship, spoke to his belief that joy can be found in the tangible manifestations of hard work and dedication.
James is survived by his loving sister, Anna Etlinger Rugo, who stood by him through thick and thin, along with his niece and godchild, Brittany Rugo, and his niece, Sara Rugo Thacker. He delighted in the laughter and innocence of his great nieces and nephews—Cory Lawson, Alexis Thacker, Zachary Thacker, and Mia Virella—who brought light into his life and filled his heart with pride. He leaves behind many cousins and friends, each of whom carries a piece of his spirit.
James's departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Sonia, his father, James Etlinger, and his brother, Michael Etlinger. Their memories will forever be interwoven with the legacy he left behind.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate James's remarkable life at The Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, located at 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ, with a viewing on March 21, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:15 PM, burial will immediately follow the service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Butler.
As we gather to honor and remember a man who lived life with passion and kindness, we will cherish the memories, stories, and laughter that he shared, holding him forever in our hearts.
