James W. "Hap" Hammell, 93, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 10, 2014. He was the son of the late John and the late Elizabeth (Mooney) Hammell. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, rank of Sergeant, during WWII. He was stationed in New Guinea, Philippines, and Fiji Islands. Hap was a dedicated volunteer instructor for the NJ Hunter Safety & Firearms (Division of Fish & Wildlife) for 25+ years. He was a Boy Scout leader, avid hunter, and fisherman. He was retired from DuPont as a supervisor in Pompton Lakes in 1987. He was an accomplished carpenter; he helped all of his family with his many skills. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in West Milford. Hap was a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The American Legion. He is survived by his beloved children, Sandra Sloat and husband Ralph, Roland Hammell, Jimmy Hammell and wife Michele and Catherine Winterfield, his cherished grandchildren, Mark Nicol and wife, Jill, Nick Hammell, Michael Hammell and wife Margie, Jacob Winterfield, and Jamie Hammell, his adored great grandchildren, Tyler, Nicol and Anthony Hammell, his loving sister-in-law, Marge Hammell and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Hap is predeceased by his devoted wife, Mary and his loving siblings, Thomas, Charles, John (Toey), Sally (Sarah), and Henrietta. Viewing will be held Sunday, June 15th , 2014 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Avenue, Butler, NJ. A Mass will be offered Monday, 10am at St. Joseph's RC Church West Milford, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please donate to: St. Joseph's Church, West Milford, NJ c/o Sister Janet; The Wounded Warrior Project or Passaic Valley Hospice of Totowa, in his memory.
