Jean Van Orden

February 10, 1925 — December 7, 2018

Jean (Sehulster) Van Orden passed away on December 7, 2018. She was 93 years young. Jean was born on February 10, 1925 in Bloomingdale, New Jersey. She attended Saint Anthonys Grammar School and was a graduate of Butler High School. During World War II Jean worked for Curtis Wright as a Draftsman (she was the only woman in the drafting department). Curtis Wright manufactured aircraft parts which were crucial to the war effort. Soon after, Jean married a World War II Naval Veteran, Machinist 1st Class, Harvey C. Van Orden. Together they raised three children, Jon, Jane and Richard. When the children got older, Jean used her skills as a seamstress while working at the Fabric Barn in Bloomingdale. After taking a few years off, Jean rejoined the work force and advanced from an entry level secretarial position to Supervisor of her division for the State of N.J. Jean was the only supervisor in the state to hold that position without a college degree. Among Jeans other accomplishments she received critical acclaim as a theatrical costume designer, and was a three time Gold Medal Winner in the New Jersey Senior Olympics. During retirement she enjoyed many activities, sewing, golf, fishing, cooking, swimming and traveling were her favorites. Her greatest joy was spending quality time with her beloved family. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Harvey, her siblings, Charles (Chuck) Sehulster (Nevada), Geraldine (Gerry) De Lazier (Bloomingdale), Ellen Krec (California), Thomas Sehulster (Washington) and Irene Brouhard (Nevada), nephew, Dennis Van Orden (Butler) and her niece Mary West (New Jersey). She is survived by her children, Jon Van Orden and his wife Kathy (Maryland), Jane and her husband Joel Bacher (New Jersey), and Richard Van Orden (Bloomingdale). Her beloved grandchildren, Joshua Bacher and his wife Nadia (New Jersey), Daniel Bacher and his wife Erin Beirnard (New Jersey) and Carey Ballinger and her husband Richard (Maryland). Her very special great grandchildren, Evan, Lia and Krista Ballinger and Millie Bacher. Nephews and nieces, Thomas De Lazier (North Carolina), Sally Sayle (New Jersey), Gail and Paul Lautenschuetz (Lake Placid), Lynn and Tony Trento (New Jersey) and Carol and Ray Creamer (Rhode Island), as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.
