John E. Edelstein V, 80 of New Providence NJ, died peacefully on August 21 with his family by his side at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains NJ. "Jack" Edelstein was born July 29, 1940 to John E. Edelstein IV and Elizabeth Howlett Edelstein in Jersey City NJ. He attended Lincoln High School then Seton Hall University where he graduated from the ROTC program with a BS in Accounting and Auditing. Jack proudly served in the US Army at bases all over the U.S. but most importantly in Schweinfurt Germany as a 1st Lieutenant Tank Unit Commander where he met and married Gerda Maria the love of his life. With an honorable discharge he returned to Jersey City, attended Wharton Business School and earned his MBA. Jack & Gerda settled in New Providence NJ where he worked incredibly hard, passed the CPA test and was comptroller at companies including Iverson Bicycles, Damson Oil Corporation and American Management Association where he eventually retired. Hard work and commitment is how Jack carried himself and he was very proud to support his wife and family and put his 3 children through college. Jack was active in his childrens lives as a mentor and loved to teach and coach, especially basketball and golf. He enjoyed coaching his boys through the years and bringing his teams to taste a bit of glory. Jack was very active in his Church, Our Lady of Peace and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jack was predeceased by both his parents. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Gerda, his son John and wife Kim of West Milford NJ, and their children Althea & Arden, and his son Peter and wife Tracy of Danville PA and their children Emily, Katelyn and Ryan. Jack was preceded in death by his loving son Thomas in 2012. In addition, Jack is survived by several brothers and sisters-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. Jack also loved spending time in Lake Wallenpaupack PA and The Villages in Florida with his many dear friends. People still talk about their parties and how he could mix a drink. Jack will be remembered as a good, generous, honorable man who loved his family more than anything and would share his advice whether you wanted it or not. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org John E. Edelsteins name. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
