Joseph F. Hammond. Jr., C.P.A.Born in Montclair, NJ on February 2, 1931, Joes formative years were spent with his parents, Joseph F. Hammond, Sr. and Agnes Roehri Hammond in Paterson. He graduated from Montclair Academy and Seton Hall University and began his accounting career in Paterson. Later he moved his firm to Pompton Lakes before establishing his practice in Butler.A life-long Yankee fan, Mr. Hammond followed their progress with the same dedication he displayed to all that he loved. In 1956 he married Margaret Smith and together they were parents of seven children. Despite the rigors of being a hands-on parent, he found time to be an active participant in softball, basketball and tennis as well as proving his dedication and leadership skills with the Paterson Jaycees and the Smoke Rise Club. He was named one of New Jerseys Five Outstanding Men of 1964 by the Jaycees.A resident of the Smoke Rise community of Kinnelon for over fifty years, he served as president of the Smoke Rise Tennis Club, treasurer of the Smoke Rise Mens Bowling League and the Smoke Rise Players. He was president of the Smoke Rise Board of Governors for three terms. Always fiscally responsible, he established the S.R. Audit Committee to ensure the community had strong financial guidance.He leaves a legacy of love and integrity to his familywife Margaret of Smoke Rise; Laura Case of New Canaan, CT; J. F. "Jay" Hammond III of Smoke Rise; Caroline OConnor of Rensselaer, NY; Gordon Hammond of Newtown Square, PA; Monica Hamrick of Asheville, NC; Mary Clare Spalti of Framingham, MA; and Timothy Hammond of Smoke Risedear daughters-in-law, Teri and Marie; sons-in-law Steve Case, Fitzhugh Hamrick, and Jeffrey Spaltiand his deeply cherished grandchildren Sam, his wife, Kate, and Grace Hough; Emily Hammond; Eliza and Charlotte OConnor; Ivy, Garrett and Lucas Hammond; Jackson, Julia and Mary Hamrick; Jonathan and Sarah Spalti; Alexandra Hammond; and Eveline, Kim and Sebastian Case as well as his special work family of Marylou Szczechowicz and Erma Mastalia.A Requiem Mass will be held Monday, July 24 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Magnificat, 2 Miller Road, Kinnelon, NJ.
