It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Cornelius Maher (Joe) on January 8, 2025 at the age of 87. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed greatly.
Joe was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn by Joseph Francis and Mary Alice Maher. He graduated from St. John’s College with a Business Administration Degree. He then proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his service, Joe began his career with Circle Buick in New York City and went on to work with General Motors for 35 years .
In 1962 Joe met the love of his life, Peggy, whom he married in 1965. They began their family in an apartment in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where they lived for several years before buying their first home in Fayson Lakes, Kinnelon, NJ. There they raised their family in a home filled with love, laughter and cherished memories.
Joe enjoyed swimming with his family, watching his children participate in the Sunday races, Labor Day races and many other town sporting events. He moved to his second home in Fayson Lakes in 1989 where he remained with his family. After Peggy’s passing in 2023, he moved from Fayson Lakes to Vernon, NJ , where he enjoyed visits from his family and friends to see various events such as the Oktoberfest and Fireworks.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Maher, his wife Peggy and his cherished grandson, Dillon.
Joe is survived by his sister, Barbara A. Mackey, her children, their spouses and her grandchildren; Jim and Tabitha Mackey (Brooke and Justin), Kevin and Christina Mackey (Lucas and Foster). Also surviving are his children, their spouses and his grandchildren: Mary and Anthony Germinario (Anthony Jr. and Aleah), Kieran and Sue Maher (Kyle), Brian and Brenda Maher (Connor, Gavin, Marybeth and Jeanette) Colleen and Frank Marcantonio (Breanna, Marissa, Savanna) and Sean and Noel Maher (Brendan and Megyn)
Services for Joe will be held at Our Lady of the Magnificat Church in Kinnelon on January 25, 2025, with a visitation at 10:00 am and Mass is at 11:00 am. Burial will immediately follow the Mass in the Our Lady of Magnificat Cemetery which is directly next to the Church.
