Joseph P. Heywang, 78, of Butler, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 8, 2018. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when he was 28 years old, he had a long, fifty-year battle with the disease. Joe was the son of the late John L. and Martha (Struble) Heywang. He received a scholarship and graduated with a BA from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana in 1963; while there, he was a member of the ROTC. Joe received his Masters degree in Student Personnel Services from Montclair University in 1971 and additionally attended Fordham University for graduate studies. His teaching career began at Holy Spirit School in Pequannock, NJ, where he taught 7th grade 1963-1964 and second grade from 1964-1966; he had 62 students in his second grade class! Joe then taught history for five years at Pope John High School in Sparta, NJ. While at Pope John High School from 1966-1973, he created a Guidance Dept, was the Athletic Director for 1.5 years, coached football, basketball, baseball, and initiated the track and field program and subsequently served as Athletic Director. He then became Director of Guidance and Director of Special Education at Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, NJ for twenty years (1973-1993). He was the chairman for BSL, ESL and the Nursing Departments and also coached Track and Field. Joe enjoyed traveling; he went to see many of the Olympics including those in Montreal, Canada, Los Angeles, California and Atlanta, Georgia. He traveled abroad to Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Balkan states, Amsterdam, and the Netherlands. Joe enjoyed white water rafting and trips out West with his nephews to the Colorado River in Arizona, and Oregons Snake River, as well as the Green Rice River, Utah. Joe believed strongly in community service. He served the Borough of Butler from 1988 thru 2010. Elected to the town council in 1988, he was council president for 5 years, and the Mayor of Butler from 2004-2010. He retired from politics when he turned 70. His contributions while serving the community include creating the ad hoc committee between the Borough Council and Butler Board of Education, the Field House project and the Butler River Walk community. Joe also strongly believed in supporting his church, volunteering many years of service teaching youth religious education at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Butler, NJ. He is survived by his two sisters, Jean (Robert) Johnson and Jane (Jeff) Broe both from Williamsburg, VA, and his brother in law, Robert Allison from King George, VA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. His sisters are very appreciative of the loving care that was provided to him by his nephew Scott (Alison) Allison and family. Joe was predeceased by his brother Raymond and his sister Theresa Allison.Viewing hours will be held on Sunday May 13, 2018, from 4 to 8 PM at the Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave. Butler, NJ. Mass will be held 10 AM on Monday May 14, 2018 at St. Anthony RC Church, 65 Bartholdi Ave Butler, NJ. Interment will immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Butler, NJ.
