Margaret Jean McCarthy, 95, of Chestnut Ridge, New York, formerly of Butler, NJ, wife of the late Thomas W. McCarthy, died on June 3, 2020. Born August 4, 1924, daughter of the late Herbert Grant and Margaret Walker of Frome, England. Mrs. McCarthy was schooled in England and shortly after finishing her schooling, supported the war effort working with the auxiliary services in England. . Fortunately for her children, she met her future husband, Thomas William, on a double decker bus where he gave her his seat. Thomas was stationed in Warminster, England while serving in the US Army. Margaret, a known fashionista, was on her way to pick up a new dress with her war allotment. After meeting Tom, they corresponded between the US and England during which time he proposed sending her an engagement ring in an Oatmeal box via the USPS. Margaret moved to the states at age 22 where she started her family raising five children while working full time at various positions and was an active member of the English War Brides Society. Margaret was also parishioner of St. Anthony's of Padua Church in Butler and member of the XYZ Club in Butler. Many will remember Margaret over the years, walking to get everywhere she needed to get to, or sitting on the porch on Bartholdi Avenue, giving words of wisdom on her outlook on life to all her stopped by for a cuppa tea and therapy. Margaret is survived by daughter Jane and son Richard McCarthy of Chestnut Ridge, NY, son Michael and wife Susan McCarthy of Butler, NJ, son Stephen and daughter Kathleen McCarthy of Denville, NJ, grandchildren Dana Febbi, predeceased by grandson Richard Febbi, Thomas and wife Margaret McCarthy, Holly McCarthy, Rachel and husband Ryan Kelly and great grandchildren Riley and Brennan Hamilton and Dylan and Dawson Kelly. Margaret is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her brother Jeffrey Grant, and sister Hilda Grant. There will be a private viewing by the family due to the COVID 19 pandemic. A Burial will also be held in private. Once the COVID 19 restrictions are lifted, a memorial celebration of her life will be held.
