MEGAN WALZER, 50 Beloved School Nurse From 2006 to 2016, hundreds of children began their schooling at the Aaron Decker School in Butler, a K-4 elementary school. Every day throughout the school year, students would, sooner or later visit the "Nurses Office". Some needed broken eyeglasses repaired, some needed broken shoe laces mended, some needed a band-aid, and some needed to feel a gentle touch. One particular student ate his lunch in the Nurses Office just about every day for 4 years. Was he sick, people wondered? No, that school nurse was Megan Walzer and that student was her Nephew Jake Grecco. He was attending the very same elementary school that his Aunt had attended as a child. Our town, schools, and community are a little darker today as we mourn the loss of Megan Walzer, age 50. Megan died peacefully at home in Butler after a long illness on March 24, 2020. Born in Pequannock, NJ on July 14, 1969, Megan was the daughter of the late Carol Weaver McCracken and Richard McCracken. While living in the Chicago area, Megan was joined by her younger sister, and "BFF" Heather Grecco. Megan graduated from Butler High School where she was an accomplished student and cross country runner. From there, she ultimately decided to pursue a career in nursing. Megan graduated from Felician College, Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing, and ultimately received a Master in Nursing from Rutgers University and earned certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Starting as a pediatric intensive care nurse at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, Megan later moved to Saint Barnabas Health Center in the same capacity. She was recruited to teach nursing at Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Jersey City. While there, she decided to pursue her School Nursing Certificate. Upon completion of the certificate, Megan assumed a position of Nurse Practitioner for the Paterson Board of Education. The next and final stop in Megans career was at the same school she attended as a child the Aaron Decker School in Butler. And the rest is history. Throughout her life, Megan was committed to numerous volunteer causes benefiting the Butler community. She served on the Butler Board of Health, and was a Girl Scout leader with her sister. In addition, they were members of the Nominating Committee for the Butler High School Hall of Honor, the Butler High School Mission Honor Committee, Board of Directors for the Butler Bulldog Education Association, and more recently active in the "Wreaths Across America" Butler/Kinnelon chapter. Megan is survived by her husband Albert Walzer, her father Richard McCracken and his wife Debbie, her sister Heather Grecco and her Husband John Grecco of Butler, nephews Danny Meehan of Butler, and Jake Grecco of Butler and UCONN, and niece Katie Meehan and her partner Doug Shortway of Pompton Lakes, as well as many friends and relatives. Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, the family is unable to hold either a wake or funeral right now. The family is planning a celebration of Megans life within the next few months and will post the details once arrangements are made. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Butler Bulldog Education Association or Wreaths Across America Butler/Kinnelon Chapter.
