Paul G Sinnema, Ofm

The Rev. Paul G. Sinnema, O.F.M., age 86, a professed Franciscan Friar 63 years, and a Roman Catholic Priest 58 years, died August 4, 2021 after a long illness. He had lived in retirement at St. Anthony Friary. A Hawthorne native, he was the son of the late James E. and Mabel E. Roughgarden Sinnema. Prior to entering the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province, he studied at St. Peter's Univ., Jersey City. After priestly ordination, Father Paul taught English at Bishop Timon High School, Buffalo, NY. He attained a Masters degree in English from St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, NY, and an MS in Education from William Paterson Univ. A long period of service in New Jersey Franciscan parishes then took place, starting with team ministry at the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, Garfield. Subsequently Father Paul served as an Associate Pastor at Queen of Peace Church, West Milford, St. Bonaventure Church, Paterson, and St. Joseph's Church, East Rutherford. Father Paul's longest tenure as an Associate Pastor took place at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Wood-Ridge, 2001-2011. He then retired to St. Anthony Friary, the Senior Friars' Residence in Butler. He is survived by his Franciscan confreres and several cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m., Monday, August 9, 2021 at St. Anthony's Church, 65 Bartholdi Ave., Butler.
