Paul J Osborne, Ofm

The Rev. Paul J. (Donald) Osborne, O.F.M., a professed Franciscan Friar 63 years, and a Roman Catholic Priest 57 years, died December 26, 2021, after a long illness. He was a resident of St. Anthony Friary. Father Paul was a native of Spencerport (Rochester area), NY. After priestly ordination in 1964 he volunteered to serve in the Brazilian missions of Holy Name (New York) Franciscan Province. In Brazil Father Paul served in parishes and held several posts in training programs for native Brazilian Franciscan Friars and seminarians. In 1984 Father Paul volunteered for the new Africa Project of the Franciscan Order, becoming Provincial Minister of the missionary endeavor in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa. Returning stateside, Father Paul taught religion at Bishop Timon High School, Buffalo, NY, and served on the Campus Ministry Team, 1995-2002. He was appointed Pastor of St. George Church, Jeffersonville, NY, in 2002, followed by service at St. Patricks-St. Rita Parish, Buffalo, NY. Resuming his missionary career in Brazil, Father Paul served as an assistant to the late Franciscan Missionary Bishop John J. Burke, O.F.M., a native of River Edge, NJ. Father Paul later become Vicar Provincial of the Friars Brazilian Province. A final return to the United States brought Father Paul to a shopping mall chapel ministry in suburban Albany, NY. Health concerns then caused his transfer to St. Anthony Friary in 2018. Father Paul is survived by his Franciscan confreres, and by a sister, Mary Margaret Alfieri of Spencerport, NY, nieces Becky Alfieri Stock and Susan Alfieri Larnier, and a nephew, Paul Alfieri.
