Richard J. Schilling, 93, a lifelong resident of Riverdale, NJ, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017. He was born in Bloomingdale, NJ, to the late Mabel (Card) and Arthur Schilling. Richard was a retired project engineer with NJ Bell Telephone Company. He served in the US Army in the European Theater during World War II with the Seventh Armored Division and is the recipient of three campaign stars for the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace (Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe. He also served in the Army of Occupation. Richard was a former member and chairman of the Riverdale Planning Board for 13 years and former Boy Scout committee man. He was a 72-year member of the American Legion, John A. Dean Post 154, Butler, and also a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Seventh Armored Division Association, and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris (Zucchi) Schilling, and by his sister, Shirley Waldeck of Washington, NJ. Richard is also survived by his son Richard Schilling and his wife Linda of Manassas, VA, daughter, Jeanne Grieshaber and husband Steven of Jefferson Township, NJ, and son Robert Schilling and wife Deb of Sussex, NJ, eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by a dear brother,Arthur Schilling. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9 to 11am at the Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave., Butler, NJ. Burial of ashes to follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, also in Butler. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Legion John A. Dean Post 154, 69 Carey Ave, Butler, NJ, 07405, in his memory.
