Richard E. Kettell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, after a brief illness. Born on March 8, 1946, Richard lived a life full of color, laughter, and deep empathy for those around him.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Richard served his country during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he built a lasting career as a Maintenance Technician at St. Vincent's Nursing Home in both Montclair and Cedar Grove, NJ, where he was known not just for his skills, but for the kindness and compassion he displayed towards the residents and staff alike. Richard was extremely athletic in younger years and became the original “Monday Morning Quarterback” as he aged.
Richard had a remarkable personality—he was a colorful, funny man who had a knack for busting chops and bringing smiles to others. His sense of humor and cheerful disposition endeared him to everyone he met. He cherished his time spent working around the house, and his passion for boating at Fayson Lakes was a treasured escape that brought him joy and peace.
Family meant the world to Richard. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen, affectionately known as “Dolly”, with whom he shared 20 loving years. Their bond was a testament to love and friendship that flourished throughout the years. Richard took great pride in his three children: James (Katie), Richard (Lucinda), and Katie (Dave), each of whom carries forward the values and lessons he instilled in them. His heart swelled with joy for his grandchildren: Patterson, Bailey, Penny, Ryder, Bo, and Sonny, who were the light of his life.
Richard was also preceded in death by his cherished father, Robert F. Kettell, his mother, Madeline (Sayers), and his sister, Noel. Even in their absence, the love they shared continues to be felt by those left behind.
A Celebration for Life will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 2:00pm-5:00pm at Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ. The funeral service will take place at 4:30pm on Monday, also at the funeral home.
As we remember Richard E. Kettell, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, warmth, and compassion. His legacy of kindness and humor lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, reminding us all to appreciate the small moments and to treat one another with love and respect. He will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will forever shine bright in the memories we hold dear.
