Robert Harold Ackerman; a longtime resident of Butler, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 24, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. Robert led a fulfilling life. He was an Air Force veteran, active in the Boy Scouts for over 55 years, spending many summers at Mt. Allamuchy Scout Reservation. During his long involvement in scouting, Robert held many positions including Cub Master, Merit Badge Counselor, Committee Member, Webelos Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster. He mentored many cubs and older Scouts. He was affectionately known as "Old Bear with many cubs". He worked tirelessly on numerous Eagle Scout projects often late into the night and in all kinds of weather. His love of Native American culture spurred the development of the Troops Dance Team. Robert started working at Chemplast in 1966, as a machine operator, weathered many changes with the company and retired 40 years later, from the company then called Saint Gobain Performance Plastics as a Shipping Supervisor. Among Roberts other passions were camping, hiking, wood carving, celebrating holidays, and spending time with his family. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Lou Ackerman, his daughter Laura Weingartner, her two sons Matthew and Daniel, his son, R.J. Ackerman and his wife Lisa, and their two sons Dennis and Christopher. Also surviving his sister Naomi "Tootie" Mury and her husband John, many nieces and nephews, and close family friend Candy Ward. Visitation will be held Monday, November 30, 2020, from 2:00pm-4:00pm and from 7:00pm-9:00pm, at the Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler, NJ. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at 10:00am also at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow the service at Mt. Rest Cemetery, Butler, NJ.
