Sai J. Fong

January 31, 1938 — October 15, 2022

Sai J. Fong, age 84 of Irvington, NJ passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Spring Hills Atrium Post Acute Care in Wayne, NJ. Born on January 31, 1938 in Canton, China. He lived in East Orange, NJ before moving to Irvington over 40 years ago.

Sai was one of 4 children born to the late Bing Young Fong and Wai Ying (Hom). At a young age, he came to the United States with his father to begin their new journey in the states. They settled in East Orange, NJ. There, Sai went to school and learned English and went on to vocational high school. He enlisted into the Army shortly after and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for 2 years. After his honorable discharge, he travelled to Hong Kong in search for his bride. He soon met his wife, Wai Kam Fong, through friends and family. He brought her over to the states and began their family, eventually purchasing their 1st and forever home in Irvington, NJ.

Sai went on to open up his own business in Bloomfield, NJ with his partner, Carmen F. and became F & F T.V. Service and Repair. He would be the local neighborhood guy to make house calls to fix and repair. He enjoyed helping when he could. Never said no. After a good run, they decided to part ways, close up shop and move on to the next chapter. Sai became employed by Marflex Service Corp. He learned about high end German cameras. This company gave him the opportunity to travel to Germany to train. It was an experience he greatly enjoyed.

After retiring from Marflex, he was introduced to Seton Hall's WSOU radio station. His next door neighbor, Erdie, would bring him along to his Asian Pacifica time slot and would share the love of music from all of Asia's countries. This would soon be his passion! Sai would religiously get up every Sunday at 4:40am and out the door by 5:15am and be ready to be on the air for 6am sharp! Whenever it was someone's birthday, it was guaranteed that he would play his famous birthday song that he would play. He did his broadcasts solo after Erdie passed and he continued the legacy for him. Sai would continue for years until they decided to shut down the Asian Pacifica slot.

Sai always enjoyed spending time with family. Every Saturday or Sunday it was a ritual for family to get together for dim sum. Then it became friends and family that became an open invitation. 11:30 was always the time slot. Noodle Wong aka Noodle Chu was their go to place.

Sai was a one of a kind grandfather. When they were younger, He would sit for hours with them playing school. He would draw, write stories, do math and would pretend to be whatever the kids wanted him to be. He had the patience of a saint. It was priceless and he loved it. Playing Jenga was one of the last things he did with them, he made his own rules and the kids enjoyable let him . Not only his grandkids he adored, but he also enjoyed watching his grand dogs. He called them his buddies and asked about them everyday. Even during his last weeks, he would still ask bout his buddies. Sai was one of the kindest , most generous soul anyone could ever meet. Never judged anyone, treated everyone with respect. He just naturally had the kind nature within him. Everyone he met always had a great conversation and left laughing and smiling.

Surviving is his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Joseph Smallheer; his granddaughters, Mia Smallheer, Alyssa Smallheer and Emma Smallheer; His brother, Chuck Fong and sisters, Connie Ng and Yin Ha; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife Wai Kam Fong and dear son, John Fong.
