Shirley Jean Hancock

January 27, 1943 — January 6, 2021

Most of you know Shirley as a light in a dark room, the kindest, most beautiful soul. Heres her storyShirley Jean Hancock of Kinnelon, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2021, but lives forever in our hearts.Shirley, the daughter of John Henry and Elsie Reed, was born on January 27, 1943 inLincolnton, Georgia.Shirley was the youngest of nine children. Growing up in a small town in such a big family, life was simple but filled with lots of fun. Shirley spent most of her time on the farm, playing with friends and family, going to church, and even going to town dances; believe it or not, she wasquite the dancer.Shirley found her way to New Jersey when she was just seventeen, leaving behind her family, but eventually meeting her beloved husband, Knute Hancock. He became the luckiest man; he just didnt know it yet. They married just six months later and had two wonderful daughters named Sandra and Sonya. Shirley, also known as Grammy, was such a blessing to all who met her. She was an amazing person and an inspiration to many. Shirley fought a hard battle with cancer for ten years. However, you would never know it. She showed us all that cancer did not define her. Shirley lived her life being selfless, never complaining, always ready to help others, whether it was knitting them a blanket or making them a home cooked meal.Among many other things, Shirley especially loved cardinals, seashells, knitting, coconut cake, Elvis, Shirley Temple, The Waltons (reminded Shirley of her childhood), singing, and spending time with her husband and their four grandchildren, as well as their five granddogs.Family was everything to Shirley. She is survived by her husband, Knute Hancock, her daughter and son in law, Sandy & Steve Spinelli, her youngest daughter and son in law, Sonya & John Sedlak and their children, Madeline (18), Kathryn (16), Jack (15) and Chloe (12).Shirley will always be remembered for her faith, her positive attitude, and her ambrosia salad. We love you Grammy!Visitation will be held from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Monday, January 11, 2021.
