Vianney Jude Justin, Ofm

Brother Vianney J. Justin, O.F.M., L.P.N., age 78, a professed Franciscan Friar 55 years, died August 19, 2021 after a shortillness. He resided at St. Anthony Friary.A Paterson native, he was born Edward J. Justin in 1942, the son of Joseph and Claire McGoldrich Justin. He was graduated from St. Joseph's School, East Rutherford, and St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, NY. Brother Vianney entered the Franciscan Friars in 1965 at St. Raphael's Novitiate, Lafayette. He professed first vows in 1966, and final vows in 1970. He received a Licensed Practical Nurse degree from the St. Francis Hospital School of Practical Nursing, Olean, NY in 1967 and employed that skill in the Bolivian missions of Holy Name (New York) Franciscan Province. Returning Stateside, Brother Vianney worked extensively in ministry to the needy and homeless in Philadelphia, PA and East Boston, MA; Franciscan sponsored soup kitchens and shelters in the 1980s and 1990s. Brother Vianney assisted Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity by offering his nursing services at the Gift of Peace AIDS and HIV Hospice in Northeast Washington, DC, 1989-1992. A call to serve the residents of Inner-city Buffalo, NY came with Brother Vianney's appointment to Saints Patrick and Rita Parish from 2002 to 2016. Even upon moving to the Friars' senior-citizen residence in Butler, Brother Vianney did not consider himself to be "retired." He joined the volunteer staff of Eva's Kitchen in Paterson, and continued ministry there, and at St. Mary's Parish Food Pantry, Pompton Lakes. Brother Vianney is survived by his Franciscan confreres, and by a sister, Claire Romano of Vero Beach, FL, brothers James Justin of Sparta, and Joseph Justin of Mullica Hill, and a sister-in-law Nancy Justin of Sparta. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas M. Justin of Sparta in 2019. Visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at St. Anthony Church, 65 Bartholdi Ave., Butler, NJ.
