Wayne Werner of Vernon, NJ passed away in the early morning on February 10th, shortly before his 69th birthday. He was born February 16th, 1953 in East Meadow, NY and spent most of his early life there before moving to Vernon in 1990 with his wife, Peggy. He spent 36 years teaching mathematics at Manchester Regional High School in Haledon. Wayne was a sports enthusiast- he was an All American lacrosse goalie at SUNY Cortland and spent most of the years to come coaching & mentoring his children in the sport. He went on to start the youth lacrosse program in Vernon, along with Randy Mills & Harry Shortway. In addition to that, he was the first head coach at Ramapo High School, and also coached football at Manchester where he taught. Being an alumni of Cortland, he took his family to their alumni camp in the Adirondacks in upstate NY every summer for over 10 years where they could enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, and experiencing the outdoors. He would return in the winters for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Wayne was a natural storyteller; he never missed an opportunity to have a conversation. After retiring from teaching in 2015, he spent most of his days working on handyman projects around the house, chopping wood, traveling with family, restoring his father in laws '66 Chevy Nova, and enjoying the simple things in life. Being from Long Island, NY, he always made sure to tune in to support his favorite teams- The Islanders, Mets, and Jets. He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander & Carol Jean Werner. He sadly leaves behind his wife, Peggy of 33 years, his kids, Kyle & Kelly, Ryan, and Leslie & Troy, and adored grandchildren, Rhaya and Everly. He is survived by his sister, Carol McCarthy in South Carolina, and brother, Craig Werner in Pennsylvania. He will be buried at Mt. Rest Cemetery in Butler NJ. Visitations will be held at the Morrison Funeral Home, 86 Bartholdi Ave, Butler NJ, Thursday February 17th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
