Zoe Stevens

January 17, 1943 — July 3, 2024

Zoe Stevens, a beloved mother, friend, patron of the arts and successful realtor, passed away at home on July 3, 2024, at the age of 81.

Born January 17, 1943, in Morley, Leeds, England, Zoe was one of three sisters to parents Annie and Ernest Stevens. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ashley Stevens and Lorna Dickenson, first husband Arthur Nachman, and husband Henry (Tom) Cutler.

As a child, Zoe was an avid ballet dancer. For several years she was a member of a dance troupe known as Sunbeams, performing in the Francis Laidler pantomime at the Leeds Theater Royal, and later attended the Royal School of Dance in London. Then, in 1961, at the age of 18, she embarked on a life-changing journey to New York City with only $20 in her pocket to work as a ballet instructor. Zoe quickly adapted to American life, humorously navigating the nuances between British and American English and culture. Her love for the arts extended into adulthood, as she cultivated a refined taste for martinis, immersed herself in literature and was a collector of fine art, briefly running an art gallery in Portsmouth, NH. For over 40 years, Zoe excelled as a realtor in North Jersey, establishing her own brokerage, Varley and Stevens, which ran for over 30 years. Her professional success allowed her to work with the region's elite clientele.

Zoe's passion for travel took her to many corners of the world, with Machu Picchu, Europe, India, Bermuda and Puerto Rico among her favorite destinations. Closer to home, she had a fondness for Maine, and the numerous hiking trails in town. She maintained a deep connection to her British roots, frequently visiting her homeland and cherishing her heritage.

Zoe was a staunch advocate for natural living, embracing homeopathic remedies and clean eating. She took pride in her holistic approach to health and wellness. Known for her kindness and attentive ear, Zoe formed meaningful connections with people from all walks of life. Her warmth extended from local acquaintances to international pen pals, exemplifying her ability to touch lives across borders.

Zoe is survived by her five children and stepchildren: Alexander Nachman, Mark Nachman (Julia), Susan Meholic (Steve), Jean Cutler, and David Cutler (Gayle), and 11 grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her vibrant spirit and compassion.
